While they both place an importance on "getting the job done", Sam is much
more cynical about his job than Marlowe. Sam wants to end the case and get
paid because even after the case is over, he still has Arher's wife to deal
with.
Marlowe has been beaten around by the system, but he's also able to feel
real emotion for other people. That is the real difference between the two
and it shows in how they interpret the code. Whereas Sam's is self-centered
and has a hard time dealing with others (especially women), Marlowe shows more
empathy for others.
