Re: RARA-AVIS: James Ellroy and Mosley

I didn't get the impression that Ellroy was talking about writing style.
His assertion seemed to be that no one, in this case Mosley, could write
a book dealing with commies in the fifties without owing him something.
He, Ellroy, held the patent.

Ellroy has never been accused of modesty. As a matter of fact, he went
on to impugn Clinton's taste for preferring Mosley to himself,
dismissing Clinton's endorsement of Mosley as politically motivated (for
which a good argument could probably be made, regardless of Mosley's
talent). Still, I have to ask why this must be a mutually exclusive
choice, can't you like both authors?

It was interesting talking to Ellroy on a more personal level. It was a
nice contrast to his increasingly tiresome public persona, but he still
didn't leave the massive ego behind.

Mark
