RARA-AVIS: Spenser and the Catskill Eagle

Okay, I know this is supposedly the turning point in the
Spenser series.... I
liked the
Valediction novel better than Catskill for it's sheer weariness
and feelings
involved, but Catskill Eagle was pretty darned hard-boiled. The
Spenser we
see (although Eagle reminds me of a James Bond novel plotwise)
kills two to
three men who are defenseless. Both he and Hawk don't really
care what they
have to do, and (in the old noir sense) it's all done because
of or for a
woman....
Now I'm going to learn about the John D. MacDonald/Travis
McGee genre... any
recommendations?
