RARA-AVIS: A Fashion Question

Leading a library discussion of The Big Sleep, and one of the
sharp-eyed
ladies wonders if Marlowe is really dressed as sharply as he
says he is (or
would have us think he is) in that famous first paragraph.
"brogues" are
brogans, right? Heavy "farmer shoes," lace-up-the-front work
shoes? Or is
a 30s pair of "brogues" is something better? At which point,
someone else
questioned his taste in suits, "powder blue" (light blue?).
Then someone
else zeroed in on his socks.
I always assumed that Marlowe is dressing the best that he
could for the
occasion: although he's no fashion plate, he doesn't look
shabby either.
