RARA-AVIS: library

Sun, 13 Sep 1998 17:50:36 -0500 (CDT) >Tom Olson,
>( sensitive librarian.) wrote recently,

"My library has a capacity of 100,000 volumes. We own 140,000. I recently
saved one copy of "Wild Wives" and threw out several crates of books by
authors I'd never heard of."

Later Tom refers to the "trash truck" that picked up said volumes.

Gawd, Tom! What forbids you from selling all those books to people, like
Mark, who want to own the authors? I belong to a library support group
that sells weeded cast-offs and donated books. We maintain two shelves of
sale books in the library year-round, store the rest, and mount one big
sale each year. Dimes and quarters (paper and hardback prices) add up to
thousands we are able turn back to the library. Half the HB books I own
were purchased this way.

Dismayed,

Bill Hagen
