Eugene Izzi did die recently, a couple of years ago. He was
found
dangling outside the window of his locked office in a high
rise, I think
in Chicago. The scene replicated one in his just finished book,
whose
title I don't recall and I'm not sure if it ever came out. He
had told
people that he thought he was being stalked by neo-Nazis whose
group he
had infiltrated while researching the book. The Washington Post
printed
a long article in the Sunday Style section on 2/2/97; the
fascinating
"The End of his Rope" explores the various theories that were
floated to
explain his death: killed by the neo-Nazis; death by
mis-adventure while
researching how his hero had saved himself from the same
situation; or
suicide in a grandstanding, PR kind of way. He had just sold
his first
book under his own name in several years after having published
a series
as Nick Gaitano. I read the first 3 or 4 of Izzi's books and
remember
liking them quite a bit. I'm not sure why I didn't keep
going.
