I agree with Mario and Kevin regarding Clancy; he's not hardboiled and
he's not a good writer (or even average). One of the professional low
points of my job as a reporter was an assignment two years ago to cover
Clancy at the University of Notre Dame's annual Sophomore Literary
Festival. The SLF is one of the oldest and most respected
university-based literary festivals in the country, but Clancy soiled
its reputation for many years to come. At one point, he said the biggest
mistake this country ever made was granting women the right to vote.
This, of course, was his most extreme statement, but it was by no means
atypical of Clancy's base behavior that weekend.
