In many ways, Mitch Tobin by Donald Westlake (under the name
Tucker Coe)
has always struck me as a template for Matt Scudder. Tobin is
an ex-cop
consumed by guilt because his partner was killed during what
was
supposed ot be a routine arrest, while he was in bed with his
mistress.
The same darkness prevails as Tobin reluctantly takes jobs that
force
him to leave his basement.
