This *is* the Camus-Postman story.

It might be in the introduction to Postman (mine's at work, so I can't
check); another place worth looking for some discussion of it might be
Joyce Carol Oates's essay on Cain in _Tough Guy Writers of the
Thirties_. There's a full length study of Cain by Paul Skenazy---maybe
the story is reproduced there too.
