RARA-AVIS: P.I. Poll Results

Kevin Smith (kvnsmith@colba.net)
Wed, 6 May 1998 11:49:49 -0500 Well, I said I would pass on the results on my P.I. Poll on The Thrilling
Detective Web Site, so here it is. The question was: Who is the best
private eye of the nineties (so far)? I asked folks to list their five
favorites, and to feel free to comment on their choices.

Sixty-one visitors to the site voted , although not everyone listed five
eyes, and some of the nominations were too much of a stretch, even for me,
to be considered private eyes. A vote wass a vote. No extra points for
first place. Of course, it wasn't really a listing of the best; it's a
popularity contest. You don't have to tell me that.

Anyway, according to the poll, the Best Nineties Eyes are, in order of
popularity:

Matthew Scudder by Lawrence Block
Elvis Cole by Robert Crais
Easy Rawlins by Walter Mosley
Kinsey Millhone by Sue Grafton
Nameless by Bill Pronzini
Spenser by Robert B. Parker
Sharon McCone by Marcia Muller
V.I. Warshawski by Sara Paretsky
Thomas Black by Earl Emerson
John Marshall Tanner by Stephen Greenleaf
John Francis Cuddy by Jeremiah Healy
(there were a couple of ties, so my Top Ten is actually eleven)

By standards of hardboiledness, especially compared to some Mother Dog like
Ellroy, I realize these guys and gals are weenies, so I don't want to
clutter up this list anymore than I have to. If you want the full list, or
to read comments, head to the
