RARA-AVIS: Highsmith

Fri, 20 Feb 1998 13:53:46 -0800 Maybe it's my 30-second, MTV-sapped attention span but I found Highsmith's
_Talented Mr. Ripley_ to be slow and well... boring. It was a real struggle to get
through, especially the first half (I threatened to stop altogether on several
occasions). It just didn't move quickly enough for me and I found I really didn't care
about the characters, who Tom was going to kill next or if he got caught at all.

There were, however, a few moments I enjoyed otherwise I never would have finished the
book. I can definately see why Highsmith has her place among the better writers of the
genre, I just didn't find it to be my cup of tea.
