For the fun of it, David Thomson's SUSPECTS (Vintage ppbk,
1986), if still
in print, is a book by a noir fan and film scholar. He takes
85 characters
from 56 movies, most of them noir, and writes biographical
profiles of
each, which include the movie adventures, but more. For
instance, in the
section on Brigid, he characterizes the last scene
thusly:
Spade "had seven or eight reasons for turning her in and,
against them,
only the vision of that hair on top of that pale body. He
turned her in,
the sap. You know a man like that's a depressive and that one
day he's
going to come to a full stop, the end of his alley, and never
say or write
another civil word."
