RARA-AVIS: decloaking

Sat, 4 Oct 1997 21:06:07 -0400 (EDT) aloha, y'all!

Walter Moseley's next book is a SciFi time travel book this winter for his
new publisher Little Brown. He does have another Easy rawlins coming from
his old publisher; book is titled (something like) Bad Boy Bobby Brown.

Jim Sallis is a national treasure. He has a new book out this month (?)
whose title escapes me. Check out Robert Skinner's Blood Red, Skin Deep.
Robert Skinner is also an academic who writes great scholarly books on
hard-boiled writers.

When you try Gary Phillips from LA, don't forget his buddy Gar Anthony
Haywood's black PI series. I think Gar's writing some tv episodes
nowadays, too. Also from LA, try Dick Lochte's two Nawleeans books.
(Dick has a co-written series starting sometime this year with Chris
darden, the OJ prosecutor.)

Oh, I just finished reading Elmore Leonard's next book Cuba Libre, his
"Spanish western," due out this january. It may be his best book. He
out-Hemingways Hemingway. (Leonard told me this past summer his first
idol was Hemingway and his "Spanish westerns.")
