RARA-AVIS: reading query, etc.?

Mon, 18 Aug 1997 11:55:12 -0400 Is the reading plan to continue through Hard-Boiled, two stories each
week (meaning Hunter and Thompson this week)? Perhaps the relative
silence last week means people are on vacation (holidays in the
hard-boiled world--never), or maybe there's some desire to move on to
other fiction.

I just read John Evans' [Howard Browne] Halo for Satan (1948). I
thought it was pretty great on the whole. Any word on Evans' other work
(e.g., Halo in Blood)? Evans has a strong sense of a genre saturated by
cliche and he makes great fun of this. His prose is wonderfully cute at
times. Here are two sentences when private investigator Paul Pine
finally gets a much needed drink: "I tilted the glass and took three
long satisfying gulps. When I brought the glass down again my inner
self was up off the canvas and flexing a bicep."

Cheers,
Doug Levin
