RARA-AVIS: Ed Noon

Sat, 9 Aug 1997 22:53:10 -0500 Rick Hall asked if anyone reads the Ed Noon stories by Mike Avallone. I've
read nearly all of the Noon novels and have corresponded off and on with
Mike for nearly twenty years. All the Noon novels are enjoyable; my
favorite is probably _Shoot It Again, Sam_. Of course, Avallone's work has
its detractors, but I've always found it to be funny and charming. I was
on a panel recently at Cluefest, the annual mystery convention in Dallas,
about books that influenced us. I mentioned Avallone's Man From U.N.C.L.E.
novel, which drew some surprised looks from the audience, but as I
explained, it was the first book I ever read that made me realize different
authors had different voices and styles. Nobody else could have written
that book in exactly the way Avallone did. I think that's an important
realization for any budding writer.

Best,
James Reasoner
