RARA-AVIS: Catching Up

Thu, 31 Jul 1997 23:08:55 -0500 I'm back on the list and have a few quick comments about last week's
stories. "The Bobby-Soxer" is a good little story with a twist ending that
I didn't see coming. I've read some of Craig's Pete Selby police
procedurals and enjoyed all of them. Now a confession: I've read very
little of Davis Goodis's work, though I have nearly all of his novels in my
collection. Now I'm going to have to read them, after being thoroughly
impressed by "Black Pudding". Great pace and characters, a brutally
effective fight in the back seat of the car--"His eyes opened very wide and
his head snapped sideways and he was through for this night and all
nights."--and an ending that's not totally bleak. I liked this one a lot.

I'm going back and catching up on the stories in the first half of the
book, but I probably won't comment on them unless something really catches
my eye.

It's good to have Rara-Avis back. I got addicted to it in a hurry.
