If you liked "Miami Purity" (and I must confess I didn't; too often it
substituted "shocking" sleaze for good writing) then you *must* go read
James M. Cain (part of your message, which I inadvertently clipped,
indicated you hadn't). "Miami Purity" is basically a raunchier version of
"The Postman Always Rings Twice" with the gender reversed.

And since it seems the thing to do, let me introduce myself: I'm a recent
PhD (Univ. of Iowa) in American Studies and a visiting prof in
Communications at Univ. of Pittsburgh; most of my work has focused on film
(I've taught film noir courses at Pitt, my current home) but I'm
interested in pop culture broadly. I've been a hard-boiled fiction fan
since forever (the first book I ever bought for myself, with my own money,
was a Hammett omnibus; later, I did my bachelor's thesis on Chandler's
work in Hollywood) and I'm really looking forward to this group --
especially to discussions of contemporary hard-boiled writers, about whom
I know very little. So, hi all!
